November 2016 Visiting Teaching Message

For the month of May and November there usually isn't a Visiting Teaching message in the Ensign, because General Conference is the month before. Our Relief Society Presidency decided to use the talk "I Will Bring the Light of the Gospel into my Home," by Jean B. Bingham. You can find her entire talk here.
I made a card that summarizes her talk on the front, and a recipe for Orange Glaze Sweet Potatoes on the back to hand out to the sisters you visiting teach. This is a family recipe, one of my favorites at Thanksgiving. Just click the image below for your FREE download.

The Importance of Visiting Teaching

The Relief Society Presidency and I, wanted to let the sisters in our ward know that Visiting Teaching is important. I came up with this handout to give to the sisters along with the list of who they visit. We wanted them to know that there are many ways to reach out to the sisters in our ward. It turned out very cute and hopefully will help them remember to go each month, and know how important their calling is.

On the handout I included a poem titled, I'm Just a Visiting Teacher, Author Unknown. And a quote from Thomas S. Monson - "We are surrounded by those in need. We are the lords hands here upon this earth, with the mandate to lift & serve his children."

I know sometimes we focus so much on the numbers, on getting 100% each month, which isn't a bad thing. But if we were to focus on the sisters we go to, and truly serve them, visiting teaching will become the lords work, and not just something we have to get done every month. You will build strong friendships, and bring many to the church. Visiting teaching isn't just about the numbers. Your sisters aren't just another check list. They need to become a friend, someone you care about.

"A sister in the church has no other responsibility outside of her family, that has the potential to do as much good as does visiting teaching." -Julie B Beck

Hand out for District Visiting Teaching Leaders

Like most wards, we have District Leaders for Visiting Teaching. They call a group of sisters and find out if they made it Visiting Teaching that month and report back to me. The presidency wanted to think of a cute way to let the District Leaders know that their calling was important, and we counted on them to get me the numbers. This is what we came up with. We attached this saying to a pair of gardening gloves and some lettuce seeds.
